TCU to face Georgia in Liberty Bowl

For the first time since the 1942 Orange Bowl, TCU will take on Georgia in a bowl game.

It was announced Sunday that the Frogs (6-6) would represent the Big 12 and the Bulldogs (7-5) will represent the SEC in the 58th annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

The Liberty Bowl is the seventh oldest college bowl game and will be at 11 a.m. Dec. 30 at Memphis’ Liberty Memorial Stadium.

Georgia won the 1942 meeting 40-26. Georgia has also won the other two meetings between the two teams; 34-3 in 1980 and 38-10 in 1988, both in Georgia.

For both teams 2016 was a bit of a disappointment. Both were preseason ranked in the top-20, but suffered hard-fought home losses to end their time in the top-25.

Georgia had home losses to Tennessee 34-31, Vanderbilt 17-16 and Georgia Tech 28-27. TCU had home losses to Arkansas 41-38 in double overtime, Oklahoma 52-46 and Texas Tech 27-24 in double overtime.

TCU is scoring 31.7 points per game and allowing 27.8. The Frogs are led by running back Kyle Hicks’ 954 rushing yards and 14 total touchdowns. Kenny Hill played most of the season at quarterback and threw for 3,062 yards and 15 touchdowns, but a leg injury has his status for the bowl game in question at this point.

Georgia scored 24 points a game and allowed 24.1. The Bulldogs have a pair of potential NFL running backs in Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. Chubb ran for 988 yards and seven scores. Michel had 753 yards and three scores. Freshman quarterback played all 12 games and threw for 2,266 yards and 14 touchdowns.
