TCU defensive end Jerry Hughes has been added to the watch list for the 2008
Bronko Nagurski Trophy, presented to the nation's best defensive player.
Hughes tops the nation with 11 sacks while tying for the top spot in the country with four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. His 14 tackles for loss narrowly trail Penn State's Aaron Maybin (14.5) for the national lead. Hughes also has two interceptions, including one returned 24 yards for a touchdown.
A junior from Sugar Land, Texas, Hughes was a tailback at Austin High School. He rushed for 1,412 yards and 19 touchdowns as a senior while adding 215 yards receiving and three scores.
Following his four sacks and two forced fumbles in a 32-7 win over BYU, Hughes was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the Football Writers Association of America/Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Twice this season, he has been selected as the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be announced on Nov. 17 with the award presented Dec. 7 by the FWAA and Charlotte Touchdown Club at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C.
