Yesterday TCU Basketball surprised a ton of people when Angus McWilliam, a native of New Zealand committed to join the Horned Frogs in 2018. You see, we are so enamored with our own basketball players here in the United States that we forget that there are some really good international players. Angus McWilliam is one of the best up-and-comers out there and I thought we should all get to know him a bit better before he arrives in Fort Worth in fall 2018. Here is my exclusive interview with future Horned Frog Angus McWilliam.
Not a lot of people here have heard about you, what can you tell them about your game that will get them excited?
"My shooting ability combined with a decent foot speed for a guy my height means that I can drag the bigs out from the paint and away from the hoop. For my teammates this would allow them to drive into this new space and create better shots for the whole team. Defensively, I am able to switch out to quicker guys and hedge harder on screens which makes the opposition's job on offense a whole lot harder."
How did TCU get on your radar as a recruit?
"I was touring Vegas with the Mainland Eagles playing in the Tarkanian Classic when Coach Patrick came out and stayed to watch a fair amount of our games. After that, we were talking almost every week and before you know it Coach Dixon and Coach Patrick were out here chilling with the family!"
I saw your background photo on Twitter is at TCU, did you visit TCU prior to your commitment, or was your relationship built when Coach Dixon was in New Zealand recently?
"During my visit to TCU in January, Coach Dixon, Coach Patrick and the staff were really welcoming and hospitable. The campus and facilities are absolutely beautiful and everything was extremely impressive. My family and I were left blown away. When Coach Dixon came out to New Zealand to visit the family, the relationship between him and my family really prospered. Following this, having Coach Patrick out to spend additional time with the fam just confirmed for us that TCU was where I wanted to commit."
Which coach or coaches were instrumental in getting you to commit to TCU?
"Initially, it was Coach Patrick that started things off. He had an answer for every question and always made me feel as if I was already part of the Frog Family. Then when Coach Dixon made the trip out to New Zealand after speaking with him over the phone for a couple of months, the family and I were extremely humbled to know that Coach and the staff were prepared to fly all the way down here to spend time with us."
By the time you arrive in Fort Worth you will be the third player from Oceania, joining Aussies Kouat Noi and Lat Mayan playing for the Horned Frogs. Does that make the transition a little easier?
"It's always nice to have guys in the family that you will spend every day with who share similar roots and can relate to what it is like to be so far away from where home is. Knowing that I will have guys like them to chill with and talk to, I believe, will be quite awesome. However, since Aussies and Kiwis typically share such a rivalry, a good sense of competition and want to get better will be introduced to practices and workouts for sure!"
You have qualified for a spot on the New Zealand U-19 national team, what does that mean to you?
"To be provided with the chance to represent my country and everything that Kiwi's stand for means a heck of a lot to a guy like me! Playing alongside fellow New Zealanders is an incredible experience and forms a special chemistry that you won't see in many places. I hope and pray that the chance to pull on the black singlet will be presented to me when it's time to leave for World Champs in Cairo this year."
That Las Vegas Invitational that TCU won early in the season was where David Patrick and Jamie Dixon first noticed Angus. So, not only did the Horned Frogs win their first tournament in years, but they also stubbled across one of the best international big men (6-foot-11 235 pounds) available. I don't know about you, but I'm super excited to get an athletic big man and pair him with a pass first point guard, Kendric Davis and see where this team goes in 2018 and beyond.
