Four-star safety Atanza Vongor picks Horned Frogs

The TCU Football class of 2018 just landed one of the best players in the state of Texas with the commitment of Atanza Vongor. Ranked as the 14th best safety in the nation, Vongor adds a physical (6-foot-1 200 pounds) defensive back to Gary Patterson's 4-2-5 defense that utilizes fast, physical players. Vongor has safety size with cornerback speed (4.26 shuttle). He could be the prototypical weak safety in the 4-2-5 defense. This was huge, not just for TCU, but the state of Texas to keep one of their top players in the state.

Vongor will be joining his high school teammate Esteban Avila, an offensive lineman in heading west across town to Fort Worth this fall. Avila committed to TCU on March 7th. #CarterBoys18 is off to a great start in recruiting with two lineman, Devin Phillips from Neville HS in Louisiana and Avila, defensive end Oshaun Mathis, two-sport star Alek Thomas and Vongor.

Billy and I both talked with Atanza a bit after his commitment and asked him a few questions about why he chose TCU.

Where do you see yourself playing at TCU, weak safety, free safety or maybe some corner?

"I see myself at free safety but I'm versatile so I can play all around."

Does it make your decision easier knowing that your high school teammate Esteban Avila will be joining you in Fort Worth?

"The thing is, I was the one as trying to get him on board and he flipped the script and committed before me. So it was a fun deal."

What really convinced you to that TCU was the right fit for you?

"The humble family atmosphere! Program history. Great, solid coaches. Complete package."

What did Gary Patterson say when you committed?

"He was all excited and ready to put it on social media for me, but I told him I wanted to wait a week."

Wait, so you actually committed a week ago?

"Yes, I sat down in his office with my family and told him."
