How good is it to have Matt Joeckel in the mix at TCU?

Matt Joeckel is going to be a Horned Frog.

What does that mean?

It means that TCU likely will have a player with some experience under center for the first game of the season. Trevone Boykin is likely going to move to wide receiver and hopefully prove his dynamic playmaking ability we've seen flashes of. The two freshmen, Foster Sawyer and Grayson Muehlstein, will probably have a year to get their feet wet and get used to the college game.
All in all, this could be a great thing for TCU.

Tyler Matthews clearly wasn't ready to be the guy, or else he would have gotten more than six meaningful snaps in his career at TCU. He also probably would have gotten some of the first team reps at spring practice.

I think the writing was on the wall and that's why Matthews decided to transfer. It's still uncertain where he's going, but hopefully it will be somewhere he can contribute. We know he's going to have to sit out a year and that he won't be going somewhere in the Big 12 or on TCU's upcoming schedule, which includes Arkansas, Ohio State and Minnesota. Early reports indicate that UTSA might be a landing spot. If he stays FBS, he will have to sit out a year.

How I see it is once a Horned Frog, always a Horned Frog. I want to see him do well wherever he lands. He did nothing wrong with the Frogs, just couldn't beat out Boykin.
Joeckel might be the best thing that's happened to TCU in the Big 12 era. The Frogs are going to need someone to play quarterback next year with Casey Pachall going to hopefully be in the NFL. Boykin can play quarterback, he was on the first team all spring, but may be better suited to play wide out.

Muehlstein and/or Sawyer are the future. But even they will probably need a year to grow and get accustomed to the college game. They've had the bonus of being at practice and they will get to work with the coaches this summer, but give them a full year to sit, grow and watch, they will be even better.

Let them grow, let Zach Allen be the back up and let Boykin be the emergency QB and let Meachem and Cumbie's offense work.
