Danzey follows long road to AU

AUBURN | Devonte Danzey weighed 290 pounds when he arrived at Auburn in January, not particularly heavy for a 6-foot-4 offensive lineman, and felt prepared for the task ahead.

He played one season at Hutchinson Community College, which utilizes an offense it considers fast-paced. He acclimated to Ryan Russell's winter workouts over time and eventually pronounced himself fitter than ever.

Then spring workouts began.

Danzey was overmatched. So what was he expecting?

"For it not to be this fast as an offense," he said Wednesday with a laugh. "We ran a fast-paced offense, the no-huddle offense, in junior college -- but it's nothing like what's here. The first couple of practices, it was like: Wow.. You expect practice to be fast, but there's no down time."

Still, Danzey isn't the least bit deterred.

How could he be?

As a senior at Tampa Bay Tech High in 2010, Danzey was just 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds. He wasn't overpowering. He created little buzz. A few small schools were interested, but even their interest was reserved.

Danzey was an academic risk with no hope of earning Bowl Subdivision qualification.
