Lake Worth coach on Looney's commitment

Lake Worth (Fla.) head coach Erick Lowe is well-acquainted with the Looney Family and Wake Forest after coaching older brother Joe Looney, who donned the Black and Gold from 2008-11, and the newest Demon Deacon commit for the 2013 recruiting class James Looney.

"Coach Mac and Coach Grobe, those guys do a hell of a job," Lowe said. "I see it as a good thing for another Looney to end up at Wake Forest with the coaching staff that they have, because those guys do a great job."

"It was a pretty typical recruitment of a Division I caliber athlete such as him. He took a couple of trips, went to Wake. He's been to FIU, but with his brother being a former player and graduate of Wake Forest and former player of Coach Grobe he's got something to hold on to or something to gravitate to as far as Wake Forest goes. He's been up there quite often, and he fell in love with the place when his brother was at school there. His parents are extremely happy for him, and it's a place that they think is really suitable for him."

Looney, who is rated as a three-star recruit by, chose Wake over scholarship offers from Bowling Green, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Marshall, Middle Tennessee State, Minnesota, South Florida, Tulane and Western Kentucky Wednesday, Oct. 31.

"It's always been one of his top choices, and just over the past couple of weeks he's been really pondering what he wants to do and we've talked about it," Lowe said. "This past weekend he really stressed that he's really leaning hard toward Wake Forest, and he made the decision yesterday to commit to Wake Forest."

The 6-foot-4 and 275-pound defensive lineman will graduate from high school in December and will enroll at Wake Forest in January, enabling him to participate in spring practice.

Lowe said Looney will be successful whether he plays defensive end or defensive tackle.

"He plays with good leverage at the defensive line," Lowe said. "We use him on the offensive line just as well. He's an athletic, big kid that can run well, gets off blocks, knows technique, and is a very smart kid. You're talking about a 3.9, 4.0 GPA kid, so he's very bright. He understands the game, and obviously seeing his brother and being tutored by his brother he knows how to play the game and has that passion for it and definitely a passion for the defensive line."

"I think he's going to get up there and do a great job and try to push for some playing time as a true freshman," Lowe said. "I know that's one of his goals. I know his brother played as a true freshman, so obviously [he] wants to follow in those footsteps. I think if he continues to work hard he's going to be a damn good player for Wake Forest."

Lowe added Looney is a carbon copy of his older brother.

"The one thing that makes him a little bit different he has more of a kid side where Joe was really about business," Lowe said. "He was all about business from day one even though he can put on that nice charm and that nice smile, but it was always business. James really likes to have fun, and that's his great personality that he has. He can have fun and work hard at the same time."
