The first two weeks of Ohio high school football are in the books and the big showcases are over. Things are about to get back to a normal schedule and once again BuckeyeGrove.com will be all over the state of Ohio catching as many games as possible. Week three may not be loaded with big-time match-ups but there is still plenty to follow this weekend on the prep scene.
1. Big-time talent on display in Lakewood
Arguably the best game in Ohio this weekend will take place on Saturday night in Lakewood as St. Edward hosts Youngstown Cardinal Mooney. St. Edward is loaded from top to bottom with future Division I prospects but for Ohio State fans the two most relevant names may be on the Cardinal Mooney sideline in junior linebacker Courtney Love and junior safety Marcus McWilson. Both players are being actively recruited by Ohio State and both will have a chance to showcase themselves in a huge match-up against the defending state champions at Ohio's division I level.
2. Still Undefeated
A handful of Ohio State's commits still see their high school teams undefeated heading into the third week of the season. For Luke Roberts and Lancaster, Pat Elflein and Pickerington North, Bri'onte Dunn and Canton GlenOak, Blake Thomas and St. Ignatius, and Najee Murray and Steubenville, the goal will be pushing forward to a 3-0 record this weekend.
Elflein and Murray shouldn't have much trouble in doing so as Elflein's squad takes on an 0-2 Northland team that looks like a shell of what it was a year ago while Murray and company take on Bishop Ryan from Canada.
For Dunn, his GlenOak squad will host an 0-2 Euclid team that does have some pretty good athletes but Dunn and company are clearly the favorites there. Roberts and Lancaster will host a solid Twinsburg team but are also expected to take that one.
That leaves Blake Thomas and St. Ignatius as the team with the toughest challenge in front of them this weekend as the Wildcats make the short road trip to perennial Northeast Ohio power Mentor. Mentor comes in at 2-0 and is coming off a big win over Youngstown Ursuline. Not only that, but Mentor also features future Michigan Wolverine Tom Strobel. It's not out of the realm of possibility that Thomas could see himself lined up across from Strobel throughout the evening.
3. Could Gedeon be next?
On Friday night, we'll be checking out a junior that just could be the next Ohioan in the 2013 class to land an Ohio State offer in Hudson linebacker Ben Gedeon. Gedeon and his teammates are set to host Brecksville-Broadview Heights who will be without the services of star junior quarterback Tommy Tupa as he sits out with a shoulder injury that he sustained last week.
Gedeon is one of the most versatile and athletic kids in Ohio's 2013 class and already holds some big offers. This will be our first look at Gedeon in pads and we'll be sure to bring video and analysis from that one.
