September 28, 2013We don't know for sure what was said in the locker room at halftime, but it sunk in for the Horned Frog players well.
After trailing SMU 10-7 and mustering just 120 yards of offense, TCU rattled off 27 unanswered second half and more than 215 yards to propel the Frogs to the 48-17 win in the Battle for the Iron Skillet.
Boykin completed eight of his 10 second half passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. The first of the scoring passes was a perfect 20-yard fade to freshman Ty Slanina.
He followed that drive up with a 56-yard strike to Ja'Juan Story on a screen. Story shrugged off a pair of defenders then raced down the sideline to find the end zone.
It was the first touchdown receptions for Story and Slanina. Slanina led the team with 63 receiving yards on three grabs. Brandon Carter and Cam White each had three catches as well.
While the offense started to click, the defense started to pin its ears back and get after Griffin Gilbert. The defense had four interceptions and six sacks, its most since 2009. Chris Hackett, Matt Anderson and Sam Carter, two, had the interceptions. Carter's second interception was returned 66 yards for a touchdown with 1:33 left in the game.
Marcus Mallett played an incredible game as he had four tackles for loss and forced a fumble.
The defense allowed just 43 yards in the second and third quarters. The Mustangs added a touchdown with three minutes left after the Frogs were up by 24 points.
TCU also got a second-half touchdown from BJ Catalon, his fourth rushing score of the year. Waymon James got on the board on a two-yard run in the first half.
Catalon finished with nine rushes for 45 yards while James had 11 carries for 54 yards. Boykin ran 12 times for just nine yards.
Kicker Jaden Oberkrom connected on a pair of field goals.
LaDarius Brown added a 45-yard kick off return for a touchdown on an onside kick attempt with 2:54 left in the game.
The Mustangs got on the board first in the game on a one-yard pass from Gilbert to Jeremy Johnson 10 minutes into the game. The Mustangs hit a field goal in the final minute of the second quarter to take the lead at the break.
SMU added a score with an 11-yard pass from Gilbert to Darius Joseph with three minutes left in the game.
