February 28, 2013Our final position preview before spring practice gets underway is the strength of the TCU defense, the secondary. Led by All-America cornerback Jason Verrett, this group is going to be key in slowing down the high powered Big 12 offenses in 2013.
Jason Verrett: 63 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 7 interceptions, 20 pass breakups
Kevin White: 37 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 interception, 8 pass breakups
Chris Hackett: 61 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions, 5 pass breakups
Elisha Olabode: 71 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, 9 pass breakups
Sam Carter: 63 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, 10 pass breakups
David Jenkins: 6'1, 193 lbs- Transfer from LSU. Redshirted in 2011. Sat out in 2012 due to NCAA transfer rules.
The Big Questions:
(1) David Jenkins was considered one of the best cornerbacks in the nation coming out of high school, but he hasn't played in two seasons. Will there be any rust? Can he step in and contribute right away?
(2) Outside of Verrett and White, there isn't much experience behind them on the depth chart at cornerback. Will any of the younger guys like Kolby Griffin make their case for more playing time?
(3) One thing that helped the TCU defense in 2012 was that they had a lot of interceptions by their secondary. Will they be able to force that many turnovers in 2013?
The Bottom Line:
The TCU secondary is the strength of this defense, but there isn't a lot of depth at this point. If some of the younger players have a good spring that could all change. As long as everyone stays healthy, I expect a big season from the secondary in 2013.
