February 27, 2013The biggest weakness heading into spring practice for TCU could be the linebacker position. Even though the Frogs normally roll with only two linebackers, it is one of the most important positions on the field for Gary Patterson's 4-2-5 defense. TCU has to replace their leading tackler from 2012 in Kenny Cain, who was also a great leader as well. Who will step their game up and fill the void?
Joel Hasley: 79 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks
Marcus Mallet: 18 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss
Jonathan Anderson: 28 tackles, 1 fumble recovery
Paul Dawson: 14 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss
Players Lost: Kenny Cain (Graduation)
Coming in the Fall: Paul Whitmil, Dac Shaw, Sammy Douglas
(1) As I mentioned above, not only was Kenny Cain the Frogs leading tackler in 2012, he was also a great leader as well. Who on the defense will fill that leadership void?
(2)Joel Hasley had issues in coverage last season, has he corrected those mistakes?
(3) Marcus Mallet came on late in the season getting starts against Texas and Kansas State. Can he be Cain's replacement?
TCU is thin at linebacker. They will receive help in the fall with the additions of Douglas, Shaw, and Whitmil, but until then, it is on the guys that are here right now. I think Mallet, Dawson, and Anderson will all have solid seasons in 2013, but the lack of depth is a concern for me at this point.
