Virginia Tech signed 17 in-state football prospects from the Class of 2012.? The Hokies are off to quick start for the Class of 2013, having already secured three commitments from Commonwealth standouts, Holland Fisher, a defensive back prospect who recently announced a transfer from Clover Hill to Manchester, Cequan Jefferson an 'athlete' from Henrico, and the latest commitment coming on Tuesday, Anthony Shegog from North Stafford.
While the quick start to another likely impressive in-state haul for the Hokies should not be that surprising, it should be noted that the Hokies first in-state commitment for the Class of 2012, Dakota Jackson from Northside, did not come until March 29th last year. Its only March 14th and Virginia Tech already has three Class of 2013 in-state verbals.
The trio has at least one impressive theme in common, they are all very athletic. At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, Fisher has been rated the 72nd best prospect nationally by Rivals.com and is considered a four star prospect. Clover Hill assistant coach Hunter Bottoms told Brian Mohr: "Literally the best term and one word to describe him is beast. He's a freak to be honest and is a scary presence on the field. He's one of those type of players that you have to know where they are." Check out Fisher's video highlights here!
Henrico coach Roger Brookes describes the Hokies second in-state commitment Cequan Jefferson: He is what most refer to as a lockdown corner. However, for us he also is a fine wide receiver with the ability to stretch the field whenever he lines up. His athleticism is formidable and he is a hard worker. Cequan will be a nice asset for Va. Tech and his speed is 4.39 in the 40. Jefferson has yet to receive his 'star' ranking from Rivals, but we at VirginiaPreps.com have him ranked the State's 22nd best prospect. You can check out his video highlights here!
Anthony Shegog, the latest commitment for the Hokies gets the same kind of 'rave' reviews from his coach, Joe Mangano. The North Stafford coach told us "Anthony is one of the most complete football players I have ever coached. This past season he played WR/RB/Kick Return/Punt Return/Safety/Corner/Linebacker/Rush End. His size and athleticism enable him to play a wide range of positions and his football aptitude allows him to be successful." We at VirginiaPreps.com currently have Shegog ranked as the State's 28th best prospect, but that ranking is likely to change when we do our next update in June.
