TCU Basketball Going Forward

The Frogs fell to 0-4 in Big 12 conference play after their 67-54 loss to Kansas State on Wednesday night. TCU head coach Trent Johnson said after the game that "we're not ready to compete, we're not ready to play with a team of that caliber right now." Johnson also went on to say "That's how we're going to be, sooner than later," he said. "(Kansas State) reminds me of the good teams I've had. That's how the game's supposed to be played. That's what the people here at TCU are going to see sooner than later. Obviously, our talent level isn't where it needs to be and all that other kind of nonsense, but we'll get there."

TCU has lost their four conference games by an average of 12.7 points per game. The program isn't where it needs to be right now. I believe Coach Johnson when he says he will get the basketball program to a place where it needs to be, but it isn't going to happen overnight. TCU fans might as well chalk this season up as a learning opportunity but there can still be improvements moving forward. Here is what I would like to see from the basketball team for the remainder of this season.

Be Unselfish: TCU is ranked 316th in the country in assists averaging only 10.3 per game. If you look at some of the better teams in the country like Kansas, Syracuse, Indiana, etc… they all average over 15 assists per game. TCU has turned the ball over 228 times this season and have only 166 assists. The Frogs are ranked 303rd in assist to turnovers ratio with a .73. The Frogs need to move the ball around and get everyone involved.

Remain competitive: The Frogs aren't getting blown out, but these losses aren't very pretty either. Coach Johnson has to keep the team motivated even though they are going through tough times. I would like to see the team try to keep the score within reach and play some closer games. TCU has Iowa State and West Virginia in the next two games. They should be competitive in each of them.

Continue being defensive minded: TCU is still ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense allowing 55.3 points per game. It is hard to teach defense because a big part of playing D is effort and hustle. Good basketball teams play defense so having Trent Johnson build the team with a defensive mindset will pay off in the long run. The Frogs cannot afford to let up on the defensive end or things could get even uglier.

Win: I know that is easy for me to say, but I would like to see the Frogs win at least three conference games. They still have West Virginia and Texas twice and Texas Tech once. Those three teams are all at the bottom of the conference with TCU. I would like to see a few wins against those teams. It won't be easy, but you have to start somewhere.

Although this season has been somewhat disappointing thus far, I still want to see improvement in the remainder of the games. Trent Johnson has to continue to build this program towards the future. What would you like to see from the basketball team the rest of the season? Discuss it with us in Hells Half Acre.
